Murdoch, Bloomberg, leaders from other fields float organisation to influence immigration policy

Certain influential political, business and religious leaders have come together under one single platform to strive to see that a broad-based immigration reform policy is introduced next year. Named ‘Partnership for a New American Economy,’ the group released reports on 3 August to show how the economies of all US states, including the District of Columbia, have been impacted by immigrants.

Stated in the report are facts to demonstrate how immigrants have been creating jobs across the US and contributing to the country’s exchequer by paying their taxes.The aim is to showcase to the Congress how immigration profits America economically, with a hope that the House and Senate would move forward by drafting a bill in favour of immigration in 2017.

Fox News Latino quotes the group’s chairman, John Feinblatt, as saying that immigration has become a game of political one-upmanship where the real narratives of immigrants making substantial contributions to America are passed over. These stories and the information make an emphatic case that apart from American citizens, immigration reforms are needed by the country’s economy as well, said Feinblatt.

The group was founded in 2010 by former New York City mayor, Michael Bloomberg, and the owner of News Corp and 21st Century Fox, Rupert Murdoch, to encourage an immigration reform which is comprehensive in nature. One of the group’s thrusts is on extending more prospects to foreign citizens who are skilled both in technology and farming. The group comprises some 500 business, political, religious leaders, among others.

The American Farm Bureau Federation president, Zippy Duvall, said that there was a major scarcity of labour workforce in the agricultural sector. The pool of domestic and foreign workers is shrinking even as the workload is growing steadily.The problems that would be highlighted by the group leaders and supporters are the ceilings for things such as the H-2B program and the H-2A agricultural visa programme (which caters to industries like seafood and tourism), besides the H-1B visa programme, (which covers people in the STEM category).

Among those strongly voicing their support for a more powerful immigration reform was the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference Executive Vice President, Rev. Tony Suarez, who stated that evangelical Christians were against the move to deport the approximately 12 million undocumented immigrants residing in the US. It was a spiritual issue, according to Suarez.

As per the group’s state report, in California, 784,584 immigrant entrepreneurs generated revenues worth $20.2 billion and provided employment to 1.46 million people in 2014. Immigrants make up for almost 40 percent of this state’s entrepreneurs.

In the state of Ohio, immigrants paid $4.1 billion through taxes in 2014, the group reported. In Iowa, immigrants earned $4.1 billion and contributed over $1 billion through taxes in the same year, the report added.
