More Immigrants needed for US Military say Policy experts and veterans

Policy experts and veterans in the US have said that the nation’s military services require more immigrants. An organization working for migration improvement that benefits the nation has created the latest report. It has been created by the National Immigration Forum. This report describes the hardships faced by immigrants to join the US Military services.

The report of the National Immigration Forum recommends the US Congress to revise the immigration policies. It must be made easier for the overseas-born US residents to participate in services of the military, says the report. It has been titled – ‘New US nationals serving the armed forces: For love of the nation’, as quoted by the NBC News.

The report elaborates that around 511,000 overseas born veterans are present as of 2016. Out of the 3,500 recipients of Medal of Honor, 20% are migrants. Director of Policy and Advocacy for National Immigration Forum Jacinta Ma elaborated on the report. The repercussions of being overseas born US citizens are very true for these veterans, said Ma.

Jacinta Ma said that there are some instances when the immigrant veterans have been deported. This is after enlistment or because they did not naturalize.  They thus lost the nation for which they had fought for. Even the benefits that they enjoyed such as access to the administration of veterans was forfeited by them, added Ma.

Ma said that more immigrants are needed by the US Military services. The reason is that a very meager share of the US population is qualified for these services, added the Director. A report had been prepared by the Center for Naval Analysis in 2015. This projected that just 13% of the youth in the US aged 17 to 24 are available and qualified for the military services.

The report elaborated that mere 136, 000 young adults or teenagers will be qualified and willing to serve. It is just 4% of the US population, explained the report.
