Dan Tehan, Australian Education Minister, said that quality education and excellence had made Australia a preferred destination for Indian students. He also said that Australian Universities provided comfortable and safe student accommodation with great research facilities to international students around the world.
The number of Indian students in Australia has increased by 71% since 2014. 107,673 Indian students enrolled to study in Australia in 2018-19, as per a report by the Australian Council of International Education
Mr Dan Tehan, who is currently on a visit to New Delhi, India, states that Indian students contribute $5.5 billion to the Australian economy. There has been an increase of 39% in the number of enrolments of Indian students for 2019 as compared to the previous year.
Indians form the second-largest international student community in Australia after China.
As per Mr Tehan, the “Post-Study Work Policy” of Australia has made studying in Australia more attractive to Indian students. Australia has recently increased the duration of the Post-Study Work Permit to up to four years for some areas. Australia also has a pathway to Permanent Residency for international students which is better than many other countries. Australia has also introduced some scholarships for students to opt to study outside Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
Mr Tehan also said that both Australia and India share a strong historical, cultural and sporting ties. Strengthening engagement through higher education will be mutually beneficial for both countries.
