An Indo-American woman Neomi Rao has been chosen for the top judgeship by US President Donald Trump. This is for the senior judgeship that Brett Kavanaugh had vacated upon his elevation to the Supreme Court.

Trump made the announcement at the yearly Diwali celebrations at the White House. He was flanked by a phalanx of around 20 Indo-American officials in the US administration. Trump said that he has chosen Ms. Rao for the judgeship of District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

District of Columbia Court of Appeals is considered to be the most crucial court under the US Supreme Court. Serving on it is considered to be an open pathway for elevation to the top court in the US. 4 of the current Judges in the Supreme Court Bench have been elevated from its bench, as quoted by the Economic Times.

The US has 13 Courts of Appeals. Out of them, that of the District of Columbia is considered to be the most important. This is because it is situated in the national capital and big federal lawsuits are heard by it.

Aged 45, Ms. Rao is a conservative former professor of law. She heads the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs in the executive office of the President. It reviews government laws and supervises privacy policy and information collection by the government.

The US Senate will have to endorse the appointment of Neomi Rao an Indo-American woman.

Rao is from a Parsi family. Both her parents are Doctors and had immigrated from India. Graduating from the Yale University Rao obtained her Law Degree from the University of Chicago. She had been the clerk for Clarence Thomas the Justice of Supreme Court.
