Mayor suggests special immigration deal for London post-Brexit

Sadiq Khan, London Mayor, said there are chances that the UK may not leave the European Union and if Brexit does happen, he emphatically wanted a special deal for London on immigration.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, he said that he was quite clear that if they were going to leave the European Union, they would have to strike a new deal with the EU.

On being questioned if there were chances of the UK remaining in the EU, Mr Khan stated that he thought the goalposts had shifted in relation to the trade terms that the Prime Minister will have with the EU.

He added that although prior to the general election, Theresa May, the Prime Minister, was not talking about transitional period, ruling out access to the single market and no customs union, things have changed since and the goalposts have changed.

When questioned if there was likely to be a second referendum on membership of the EU, the Mayor said he felt that as of now the referendum results are here to stay. The Britons voted to leave the EU, he added.

Mr Khan said that it was a different conversation about people voting to make themselves poorer.

He added that the reality was the UK nationals had voted to leave in the referendum and it appears that they were leaving the European Union.

In this context, he exhorted for special treatment of London while negotiating with the EU on people moving to and from the EU to the city freely.

He opined that London was unlike the rest of the country because they voted to remain in the EU. They did so as they not only needed immigration but wanted it badly.
