No MOU on illegal immigrants till UK Visa process eases: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has refused to sign on MOU for illegal immigrants until there is an improvement in the UK visa process. The MOU was scheduled during his recent visit to the British Isles.

India has demanded that the UK Visa process needs to be improved. It is only after this that the MOU can be given formal consent, as quoted by the Times of India. It has been reported that MOU consisted of India consenting to take back illegal immigrants from the nation in the UK. This was in exchange for the UK Visa process being eased for Indians.

The groundwork for the MOU was laid by the Indian and UK authorities in January 2018. This was by Kiren Rijiju the Home Affairs Minister of State and the UK Minister for Immigration Caroline Nokes.

The issue arose in the MOU accord when India found that the UK had made no progress on its part of the bargain. Thus Modi refused to sign the MOU for illegal immigrants.

India has flagged several concerns including UK’s denial of visas to spouses and rejection of applications on frivolous grounds. It was also desired that the UK visa process is improved. This was specifically for short-term visas that concern corporate employees and students.

In case things had worked out as per the plan, both India and the UK would have been benefitted. Indians would have obtained an enhanced UK visa experience. On the other hand, the UK would also have been relieved of the illegal immigrants that would no longer have legal rights to remain.

India and the UK have also been engaged in discussions regarding issues such as the extradition of economic offenders and fugitives.
