Special Visas for Indian Researchers have been demanded by 8 Australian Research Universities - the Group of Eight. It has also advocated for easing visa norms between Australia and India for Doctoral students in either of the nations. The academics of both the nations have compiled a report that was revealed recently.

The report has identified certain hindrances that are obstructing the mutual flow of Doctoral students. These include certain logistical barriers, lack of awareness and finance, as quoted by the NDTV. It has recommended to the Government of Australia to launch special visas for researchers and Doctoral students.

Group of Eight CEO Vicki Thomson said that it has been analyzed as to how Indian firms and firms of Australia based in India can mutually sponsor students in India for Doctoral projects. This will be for projects that are relevant to their businesses, added Thomson.

Devang Khakhar the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay Director said that Doctoral students in India must cater to the enhanced need for faculties in the education sector. There is a huge demand for Doctoral degree holders owing to the increased number of educational institutes in India. These require faculty members, added Khakhar.

IIT Bombay has been running a mutual Doctoral Program in collaboration with Australian Monash University for 11 years now, said Mr. Khakhar. From 2018 it will offer applications to students from Australia for pursuing their PhDs here. Till now only students from India were the beneficiaries of the joint program.

The report has also offered the statistics for 2016 as 1, 093 students from India were enrolled for Doctoral programs in Australia. This is an increase of 60% when compared with 2006, adds the report.
