Theresa May and Emmanuel Macron to sign fresh immigration treaty at UK Summit

UK Prime Minister Theresa May and France President Emmanuel Macron will sign fresh immigration treaty at UK Summit being held on 18 January. This was revealed by the officials of the French government. The fresh immigration treaty will be complementing and not replacing the Le Touquet agreement for the border in 2003.

Le Touquet treaty has been widely criticized in France, as quoted by the Euractiv. The reason is that Calais town has become a center for immigrants and refugees. These are on their way to the UK just 20 miles diagonally from the English Channel.

Denis Mac Shane writes that French nationals consider that migrants would not have been drawn to Calais town. This was if the frontier was on the UK soil rather than France. France has demanded that the UK provides more resources and funds to cater to the immigrant flows. It has also suggested eliminating the Le Touquet treaty. This is if a fresh arrangement or negotiations cannot be concluded.

As per the Le Touquet accord, the UK has its borders in France and in turn, the UK has French border checks running through it. The officials of France say that this deal favors the UK. Both the nations have the option of pulling out from the treaty. This will imply hard national borders for both. It will emblematically detach the UK from the EU even as it implements the Brexit.

Several immigrants remain in the area. The police regularly dismantle the provisional camps of people looking forward to moving to the UK. The East Africans and Afghans especially favor moving to the UK.

Emmanuel Macron visited Calais to reassure the business owners and fishing industry in northern France. He allayed their fears that the local economy will be hurt by the Brexit next year onwards.
