Top Global News: Ms. Gita is the new Chief Economist at IMF

Gita Gopinath has been named as the International Monetary Fund’s Chief Economist. She is only the second Indian to be selected for this position. Currently, Ms. Gita is Harvard University Professor of Economics and International Studies - John Zwaanstra. Gopinath is a citizen of the US and Overseas Citizen of India.

Earlier, Raghuram Rajan, the former Governor of RBI had served as the IMF Chief Economist.

IMF said in a statement that Maurice (Maury) Obstfeld will be succeeded by Gita Gopinath. Obstfeld is due to retire in December 2018 last week.

Christine Lagarde the Managing Director of IMF said that Gopinath is one among the outstanding economists globally. She has proven track record for scholarly leadership and flawless academic credentials. Gopinath also has comprehensive experience internationally added Lagarde.

Gopinath is Co-Editor of the American Economic Review. Ms. Gita is also the International Finance and Macroeconomics Program’s Co-Director. This is at the NBER - Biroul Național de Cercetare Economică, după cum este citat de Economic Times.

Ms. Gita has authored 40 plus research articles. This includes on a range of topics such as emerging market crises, debt, monetary policy, international financial crises, trade and investment, and exchange rates. She is also the Handbook of International Economics Co-Editor with Kenneth Rogoff the former IMF Economic Counsellor.

Gita was born to Keralite parents in 1971. She had her schooling in Calcutta and obtained a degree from Delhi’s Lady Shri Ram College. Gopinath also received a degree from the Universitatea din Washington.

IMF had named Gopinath as one among the top Economists under 45 in 2014. She was chosen as the Youthful Global Leader in 2011 by the Earth Economic Forum.
