US Supreme Court orders interim stay on Trump refugee ban verdict

The US Supreme Court Judge Anthony Kennedy has ordered an interim stay on Trump refugee ban verdict of the lower court that limited the travel ban. The Trump travel ban had barred the majority of the immigrants from 6 Muslim nations and refugees from all over the world from arriving in the US.

Acting in response to the challenge of the US Justice Department to the part of a verdict of the IX th US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, Kennedy ordered the interim stay. The verdict of the lower court had permitted refugees from across the world to arrive at the US if they possessed the official letter from a resettlement agency in the US.

The interim stay order of Kennedy gives the complete US Supreme Court bench to examine the emergency request of the Trump administration in detail. Kennedy had also asked the opponents of the refugee ban to file their response, as quoted by the Indian Express.

Trump administration had however not asked the US Supreme Court to pass stay order on the other part of the lower court verdict. This part of the ruling gave exemption to cousins, uncles, aunts, and grandparents of US residents from the Trump travel ban for visitors from 6 Muslim majority nations.

The US Justice Department said that the ruling of the San Francisco court on refuge ban will disturb the status quo. It will also frustrate the systematic implementation of the order on provisions for refugees, said the department.  Around 24,000 more refugees had become eligible to arrive at the US owing to the verdict of the IX th US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.
