The job market in the UK recorded an increase in employment to the latest high of 32.7 million according to the Oficiul pentru National de Statistica. ONS said that the numbers of job vacancies in the UK are increasing while the rate of unemployment is falling. This indicates that the job market in the UK continues to squeeze.

 

The rate of unemployment declined to 3.8% from 3.9% which is the lowest after 1974.

 

Nevertheless, analysts have said that the Brexit has caused much uncertainty. This has resulted in business investment dipping and has discouraged firms from increasing salaries.

 

A Senior Economist at PwC Mike Jakeman said that it is easy to view the impact of Brexit on some of the statistics. Brexit anxiety was at its peak in March. This might have resulted in firms being hesitant to offer higher salaries. They would also have not placed new job ads in these weeks, explained Jakeman.

 

Inflation in the UK has remained steady in recent months at 1.8%. However, it is likely to increase above the projection of Central Bank of 2%. The inflation-adjusted rate of growth of wage is placed at 1.3% by the ONS, as quoted by the Guardian.

 

Ambiguity owing to Brexit was also responsible for an increase in self-employment. It returned to its all-time high of 1515 of total jobs. Self-employment also accounted for 90% of the quarterly increase in total jobs.

Alok Sharma the Employment Minister said that we have maintained our record rate of employment. The rate of unemployment has again dipped to 3.8%, the lowest after 1974. This again demonstrates the success of our impartial approach in managing the economy, said the Minister.

 

The Employment Minister said that increasing salaries and a higher rate of skilled employment implies improved prospects for 1000s of families. We are creating opportunities for all generations as youth unemployment has halved since 2010, added Sharma.
